Introducing
Seiko 5 6309-5450 "Harlequin"
Circa 1981
Jester, joker, harlequin. A mockery of reality, tuned to twist our minds and pervert our senses. In every sense of the word, this timepiece delivers.
From the cross-checked dial and inner bezel, stark black and white hands and round gold hour markers at 12, 6, and 9'O, this watch is out to delight.
Perhaps the only reminder that you are not in play-land, stuck in the real world, is the white day and date wheels, its window carved out absolutely without any decoration. it breaks the perfection of the dial's absurdity - polished mirrors clashing with a brushed metal finish.
Even the case is an odd construct. The otherwise square case is interrupted by diagonal cuts across the corners, resulting in a perverse octagon.
And around this pantomime the hands dance - their differences worn in reflective black and white.
How very odd. How very alluring.
