1970s Vintage Seiko 6139 Black Helmet Chronograph "Vader"

Introducing
Seiko 6139 Black Helmet
Chronograph "Vader"
Circa 1970s

The helmet chronograph, alongside the infamous bullhead, has to be one of the most charismatic and eye catching cases in all of horology. The serious depth given to the case gives Seiko a lot of space to play with in terms of dial and chapter ring design.

The result of which is a very distinctive watch that makes people look. While it takes a bit of getting used to, a helmet case chronograph soon grows on you, especially on a nato strap. I have a white helmet on a black leather nato and it is simply amazing.

The stark black dial is matched with white minute and tachymeter markings, and a green 30-minute register subdial completes the look. What's left is for the bright red chronograph seconds and register hands to cap off the trinity of colors.

Reading the time is a breeze, thanks for the painted white hour and minute hands, helped by the thick appliqued hour batons around the small dial.

It's an alien of a watch - chronograph pushers poking out of the tall case, its strange lugs protruding wildly out before connecting with the bracelet - but it's endearing, and special. You won't get bored of this one, I promise.
