The coveted panda dial gets a modern twist in the rendition, with PVD black replacing the stainless steel chic and a striking gold dial and bezel to match the radical black sheen of the case and bracelet.

The flyback movement of the Citizen 8110 lies underneath the exterior, a compact chronograph with an odd quickset day feature where you pull out the crown to its first position and push the chronograph reset button. 

Definitely a cooler and much more attention-grabbing version of the infamous bullhead chronograph from Citizen, the Popstar comes in great condition, the bezel and crown showing little signs of use. The aftermarket PVD bracelet retains its protective cover. What's the notice are the chronograph buttons, which remains stainless steel. 

The bright red chronograph hands are in exceptional condition, though like many of its peers, Popstar's minute register carries on a perpetual count as long as the movement is wound.

Small flaw aside, this is a really exceptional timepiece for the avid collector.

Who doesn't love a good panda dial? While this pseudo panda might look a bit odd with the extra dial in the 6'O, it's still worthy of collection nonetheless.

Rightly called the Challenge Timer, before collectors started calling it bullhead or easter bunny, the flyback chronograph was produced right up till the 1980s, a smaller offering than Seiko's infamous 6138 bullhead. 

I like how Citizen creates a certain type of symmetry in its dial design, and it all adds up to a nicer looking wrist piece. 

There's a lot of depth to the dial, which gives nerds like me a lot of new things to notice and appreciate every time I look at it.

Three types of hands adorn the chronograph, the sword hour and minute hands playing background to the bright yellow chronograph seconds and scarlet 30-minute and 12-hour totaliser hands. 

The registers sit in the nicely radial patterned sub-dials, giving very good legibility. 

The hands and sub-dials are complemented by the sporty black tachymeter and the outstanding hour markers tipped with lume. 

The timepiece is presented in a banded bracelet, according a little class to the look. I must say that Citizen is starting to impress me quite a bit. Buy it.

If you've been around people with too many watches for their wrists, you're likely to hear to term "daily beater" quite a fair bit. 

That's the term given to the durable, hard-hitting, resilient (or so we think) watch they have in their collection. It's usually steel, it usually comes in a bracelet, and (to me at least) it's a chronograph so that I can also use it to measure time. 

Others might have a diver with a rotating bezel, but that's apart from the point.

What I'm trying to say is, there are beaters, and there is this guy here.

This watch is a sentinel - built to last in frame and in design. The bold markers on its dial staring the ages in the face, its body a challenge to the ravages of daily wear. 

Armored in a tonneau case, this flyback is built sturdy and strong. The hand-windable automatic chronograph is practical and useful in many everyday situations where you need to record time. Its robust design and construction gives one a confidence that is oft missing from vintages.

The layered dial catches your fancy first and foremost - a sporty chapter ring leads the way into a dial bevelled with three other layers - the date window, the two 12-hour and 30-minute recorders, and the inner dial that sports the Citizen brand. 

White painted hands point out the hours and minutes, marked out clearly by similarly painted hour batons. What I personally like about the batons are how the 5 and 7'O cut into the 30-minute recorder instead of ending abruptly like on other chronographs. 

There's a very likeable symmetry in this one, I tell you.

The highly legible hands are complemented by bright red hands for the chronograph functions, and that's ok with me. I think everyone needs a bit of color to get through the day.

Don't get me wrong - I love Seikos, but this one might just be a nice addition to the chronograph freaks out there. Who doesn't want a flyback chronograph at a manageable cost?
